The primary purpose of this fun, educational program is to raise awareness of the importance of remembering the past and creating a desire to pursue the scientific fields of archaeology and anthropology. The exercises are essentially mock versions of the same analytical methods archaeologists use to locate, measure, organize, and interpret archaeological remains. They are designed to be both instructive and challenging, but also enjoyable. Take-home exercises are to be submitted at the beginning of lab sections on the dates listed below. Invented in 1973 by Dr. Edward Harris, the Harris Matrix was first published in the journal, World Archaeology, in 1975 and was followed by the first edition of the seminal work, Principles of Archaeological Stratigraphy, in 1979. Archaeologists rely heavily on the three basic laws of stratigraphy to understand layers in the dirt, create archaeological context, and maintain relative dating. These laws are: The Principle of Superposition: in a series of layers and features, the upper layers were deposited later and so are younger, and lower layers are older. For the general reader, these are also an EXCELLENT introduction to the basic fundamentals and techniques of archaeology, as well as some of my own personal favorite archaeological sites from around the world.
